It’s been a few years since Chatterbox has journeyed back to mythical Greece. Any time we do, there’s no better traveling companion than Professor David Sick of Rhodes College, who has partnered with us on Oedipus the King, Argonautica, and Cupid & Psyche. My thanks to this expert for taking the time to steer us in the right direction, and for doing it with his usual knowledge and wit.
This show, like its antagonist, was something of a monster. Take a look at the photos if you don’t believe me. Microphones everywhere, huge sound effects, a relatively large cast. To complicate things further, on recording night we decided to test a live stream of the process on Periscope. I am indebted to the game, energetic, and focused cast, who came together beautifully and who never permitted the process go off the rails. I’m even more indebted to David Barton, who drew this show in his first solo outing as a Chatterbox Producer. Like an immensely talented chef, he took a huge array of ingredients and blended them together into something balanced, exciting, and satisfying.
In a lot of ways, the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur is ideal for an audio interpretation. The labyrinth is dark. Somewhere out there is a monster. You can’t see it. But every now and then you can hear it. It’s getting closer. Calamity may await around any corner. Yet you can do nothing but walk. So you walk.
I hope it’s easy — and fun — to let your imagination take you there with us. Enjoy the show.
